Sylvan Lumsden, a native of Seattle, started cello studies at age four with her mother. She received her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the Hartt School of Music and completed long term teacher training in Suzuki pedagogy with Pamela Devenport. Before moving back to Seattle in the summer of 2010, Sylvan lived in Connecticut teaching and performing. From 2000 to 2010 she was the cello instructor and department head at the Suzuki Music School of Westport, a member of the Kenosia String Quartet of Stamford, and a member of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. She also co-founded the Wildwood Groups . Sylvan has studied with Ray Davis and Craig Weaver, of the Seattle Symphony, Carter Enyeart, formerly of the Philadelphia String Quartet, David Wells of the Hartt School of Music, and Jeffery Solow of the Amadeus Trio and Temple University. During the summers, Sylvan is on the faculty at the North Carolina Suzuki Institute. She has also enjoyed teaching at the Hartt School Suzuki Institute, Ogontz Suzuki Institute, and Southern California Suzuki Institute .
